Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum, has stepped down from his role as Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu. His resignation reportedly took place about two weeks ago, although it has not yet been officially confirmed whether the presidency has accepted it.
According to sources, Baba-Ahmed resigned for personal reasons but did not give any further explanation for his decision. He was appointed to the role in September 2023, serving in the office of Vice President Kashim Shettima.
During his time in office, Baba-Ahmed faced criticism from certain quarters. One notable instance was a disagreement with the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, who had urged northern appointees not to remain silent when the Tinubu administration was being misrepresented. This came after Baba-Ahmed responded to Matawalle’s dismissal of the Northern Elders Forum, which had earlier stated that the North made a mistake by voting for Tinubu in the 2023 elections.
Despite the controversies surrounding his role, Baba-Ahmed remained a prominent figure in political discussions, especially in northern Nigeria.
